On Sunday, June 25, Anshe Shalom ran a blood drive sponsored and organized by The Men’s Club. Many of the shul’s congregants came to donate blood, in addition to others from across the community. Some were first-time donors, and others came with their donation cards as they have donated blood many times before. All left happy to have fulfilled this great mitzvah and pledged to donate again soon. The timing of the blood drive was ideal as there is currently a blood shortage in the New York area. Each pint of blood donated can save up to three lives. The need for blood products has increased due to more advanced surgeries, chemotherapy and an aging population. There is no laboratory substitute for blood, so donations are vital. The New York Blood Center is conducting blood drives throughout the New York area. If you missed the Anshe Sholom Blood Drive, you can still help by visiting the New York Blood Center website at http://nybloodcenter.org/ and finding a blood drive or donation site.
