Dr. Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg will present “Learning to Speak: A Midrashic and Chasidic Portrait of the Biblical Moses” on Monday, May 22 at 8:15 p.m. at Young Israel of New Rochelle. The lecture, which is free and open to women and men, is part of a continuing series sponsored by the Women’s Initiative for Jewish Studies.

Drawing from her new book, “Moses: A Human Life,” Dr. Zornberg will explore how Moses’s initial sense of himself as “not a man of words” comes to a poignant consummation in the long speeches he makes to the people before he dies. An examination of Midrashic and Chasidic sources raises questions about the movement of desire—about transitions, transmissions and transferences.

Dr. Zornberg earned B.A. and Ph.D degrees in English Literature from Cambridge University and has taught Torah at leading institutions in Jerusalem for the past 30 years. She holds a Visiting Lectureship at the London School of Jewish Studies.
