The Jewish Link of New Jersey and Gotham Burger would like to recognize SAR seniors Sophie Hecht and Rebecca Hyman as this week’s co-sportstars of the week. The dynamic duo is coming off of a terrific championship season.
The SAR coach told The Jewish Link, “While our team has no named captains, Sophie and Rebecca were the true leaders of this team all season long. They motivated their teammates—bringing an unmatched fire and passion—on and off the court. They were determined to win this year, and in their own ways each earned the title of champion.
Yasher Koach on a great season. Who is your role model and why?
Sophie Hecht: Alex Trebek because he is flawless in every single one of his episodes.
Rebecca Hyman: My mom because she is so strong and has overcome so much. She fought breast cancer without ever feeling hopeless.
Who is your favorite professional athlete?
SH: Tim Duncan, because of his adorable relationship with Gregg Popovich.
RH: Paul George because of his comeback after a severe knee injury. I tore my ACL in the semifinal game in 2015. Over the course of my ten month recovery I looked up to Paul George for inspiration to overcome my own struggles. I wanted to make a strong comeback the same way he did.
What is your greatest athletic accomplishment so far?
SH: Winning five championships in six years.
RH: Winning MVP of the championship game my senior year.
What is your earliest sport memory?
SH: Playing basketball at JBL, the Jewish Basketball League, and my coach telling me not to “donkey kick” when I shoot.
RH: Playing mini basketball in my basement with my three brothers
What is the funniest thing that has happened to you while playing ball?
SH : Seeing someone (*cough cough* Rebecca) shoot in the wrong basket during a semifinal game.
RH: When Sophie accidentally pulled down my pants in the middle of a game.
What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?
SH: Play cards with my sister
RH: Spend time with my family and friends.
What is the best thing about being a sportstar?
SH: Loading up my room with trophies.
RH: Having all the memories of the accomplishments that got me here
