(Courtesy of YIS) On Wednesday, May 8, over 200 people gathered at the Young Israel of Scarsdale to mark Yom Hazikaron and to celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut.
The evening began outdoors, with a moving tekkes (ceremony), led by the B’nei Akiva of Scarsdale. Then, as the sun set, sorrow turned to joy with the onset of Yom Ha’atzmaut. The community entered the YIS sanctuary for a special holiday tefilah (prayer service) led by Rabbi Isaiah Rothstein, who is the lead singer of the Zayah band.
Following tefillah, everyone was invited to a special YIS BBQ seudah (festive meal). Sponsors generously supported this free event, and additional proceeds were directed to the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF), to help strengthen our Israeli soldiers. Rabbi Jonathan Morganstern said, “We are very proud at the Young Israel of Scarsdale to celebrate the establishment of Medinat Yisrael as a chag—a festive holiday in every sense of the word. Israelis who happen to be in Scarsdale for Yom Ha’Atzmaut actually tell us that next to being in Israel, there’s no place they’d rather be. To me that’s what it’s all about.”
