Riverdale Y Senior Events

October 16 at 1 p.m.: Esteemed cabaret singer Francesca Amari will perform in You Make Me Laugh.

October 20 at 10:30 a.m.: A lecture on The Rise of the Jewish Department Store will be presented by Marilyn Kaufman.

October 21 at 1:15 p.m.: A lecture on the Universe will be given by Arnold Gottfried.

October 27 at 10:30 a.m.: Relieve stress by pretending you are leading a symphony orchestra.

All of these events are open and free to adults over 60.

Jewish Basketball Hoops Registration Open

Registration is now open for JBL, the Jewish Basketball League for boys in kindergarten through 4th grade and girls in kindergarten through 6th grade. The games will be played at the Solomon Schechter schools in White Plains and Hartsdale. The basketball season begins on November 15.

YIVO at the Riverdale Temple

On Sunday, October 18, at 2 p.m., the Riverdale Temple, in partnership with YIVO, will be giving a free lecture panel discussion on American Jewish Identity in the 21st century and the question, “How do we build a Jewish future in modern America?” The Riverdale Temple is located at 4545 Independence Avenue at 246th Street.

Jazz at the Riverdale Y Begins Sunday October 18 at 7 p.m.

Bronx-featured jazz musicians will be performing at the Riverdale Y for season 2 of the beloved jazz program. It will kick off with Bernie Williams, who, together with Louis Hayes on drums and Don Friedman on piano are bound to make an exciting night. Additional programs will be held all season long. PUMP: The Movie Screening

The JCC of Mid-Westchester is hosting a screening about the story of America’s addiction to oil to be held on October 19 at 7 p.m. The event is $10 for adults. Students get in free.

The Shabbos Project: Westchester Community Challah Make

Westchester is joining the worldwide tradition! On October 23 and 24, Jews in over 465 cities and 65 countries are celebrating Shabbat. To kick it all off, the JCC of Mid-Westchester is having a challah make (or bake-off). This event will be on October 22 at 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The cost is $20 per person.

Chabad Offers Spiritual Class

Beginning Sunday morning, October 25 at 9:45 a.m., Chabad will be presenting a six-session course called The Journey of the Soul. The program will provide spiritual insight into the soul’s journey through life, death and beyond, as well as ancient Jewish wisdom that sheds light on the philosophical, emotional and practical aspects of coping with death and mourning. RJC Media Expert Aryeh Green to Discuss the Jewish State

A discussion on “Reasserting the Legitimacy of Israel and Zionism” will be held at the RJC on Sunday, October 25, at 7:30 p.m. Speaker Aryeh Green will offer a “radical approach” to defending the Jewish state in the media, and light refreshments will be served. Swim Relay Event

The Riverdale Y needs your help: its pool, which helps hundreds of community members learn to swim, become lifeguards and assist with therapy, is in need of repairs. A 24-hour swim relay will be held on November 7–8. To help support the initiative, visit

Financial Fitness Educational Workshops

A three-part series of educational workshops on the topic of financial fitness will be held on October 20 and November 17. The October 20 session will be a credit workshop, followed by the November 17 session which will help people be aware of how to prevent identity theft. Eight-Week Jewish Music Course to Begin October 19

Interested in learning about the entire history of Jewish music? You’re in luck. Cantor Randy Herman of Bet Torah in Mt. Kisco will be teaching all about Jewish music from ancient biblical times to the diaspora. Tuition is $280 and the course will be held on Monday mornings from 10 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. Classes will be on October 19 and 26, and then November 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and December 7 at the Temple Israel Center in White Plains, 280 Old Mamaroneck Road.
