Dr. Shari L. Lowin

Dr. Shari L. Lowin, professor of Religious Studies at Stonehill College, will speak on “Biblical Rock & Roll: How Secular Israeli Musicians Carry On a Medieval Tradition” on Wednesday, December 14 at 7:45 p.m. at Young Israel of New Rochelle. In her talk, Dr. Lowin will dispel the myth that Israeli rock musicians ignore their Jewish heritage, showing instead how lyricists are continuing a centuries-old tradition of integrating Biblical tropes into secular poetry. An expert on how sacred scriptural imagery was incorporated into secular poetry by medieval Jewish scholars in Spain, Dr. Lowin also serves as Middle Eastern Studies program director at Stonehill College.
