The Riverdale Minyan invites the community to a melave malka celebrating the completion of a new Torah on Motzei Shabbat, November 18, Rosh Chodesh Kislev, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Commissioned by TRM members Isaac and Judith Putterman, the Torah, written in Israel by the sofer Shlomo Mondray from Bnei Brak, will find its new home at TRM after people are invited to finish writing the final letters of the Torah by those who have contributed to the event. The celebration will continue as the Torah is danced to the aron kodesh accompanied by live music, followed by special activities for children and good food.
The Riverdale Minyan, started in June 2015, is a dynamic Modern Orthodox congregation providing spiritual enrichment, Torah learning and connections to Israel in a warm and welcoming environment for all ages. From the outset, TRM was infused with vitality and motivated by its mission to incorporate the talents and ideas of all its members at every level of activity. As such, TRM boasts a cohort of all ages, where participants share in leading prayers and Torah reading, deliver enriching divrei Torah and run educational programs for both adults and children of all ages. Chesed projects are planned to benefit the community, Israel and elsewhere.
TRM is grateful to The Riverdale Temple for providing accommodations for this new and expanding congregation. Morning services are held daily and Shabbat begins with Friday night services, continues with Shabbat morning services and delectable kiddushes and ends with Saturday evening services, with multiple speakers throughout the day. The community provides halachic advisers to help with questions and various life-cycle events, weekly and monthly lectures, sponsorships of scholars-in-residence programs and extensive youth programming. Communal and multi-generational events are held in collaboration with existing Jewish institutions.
Bringing people together in celebration of completing a Torah is a mitzvah TRM wants to share with the community. The event will be held at The Riverdale Minyan, 4545 Independence Avenue.
