Acrylic painting by Danielle Lehtinen.

Gallery 18 at the Riverdale Y welcomes the community to it’s August “Splash!,” an exhibit of abstract acrylic paintings on canvas by Danielle Lehtinen, which will be on view through September 3.

“My paintings are a sort of jewelry for the walls,” explained Lehtinen. “Color, movement and spontaneity are key.” Exuberant, bold, lively in color and texture, playful and fun, this exhibit is “like taking a leap into cooling waters in the heat of summer.” Much of Lehtinen’s work is abstract, although one will undoubtedly find representational content in her paintings.

Lehtinen, born in Poland, came to the United States as a young girl. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude in art/art history and philosophy at SUNY Stony Brook and her Masters of Arts in art and philosophy at Columbia University. Lehtinen taught aesthetics, existentialism, and the history of humanities to adults at Columbia University, CUNY and NYU. She also taught at the Parsons School of Design, where she was given the chance to study color theory and interior design.

After retiring from teaching, she returned to Warsaw and finally found the freedom and resources to paint full time.

She has lived in Poland, Manhattan and Brooklyn and now has found a new home and base in Riverdale. She continues to advance her artistic development by visiting museums and galleries in New York and Florida and attending major exhibitions. Lehtinen points to her latest inspiration as Manhattan’s SoHo street art, where local artists invited her to showcase her works alongside their own.

Her advice to those looking at art is, “Trust your eye and your heart. If you buy what you love, you can enjoy it daily.”

Gallery 18 at the Riverdale Y is located at 5625 Arlington Avenue, Bronx, New York. Showcasing the work of local artists representing a variety of media, such as oils, acrylics, pastels, collages, mixed media, photography and ceramics, it features a different artist each month. All art is for sale with 20% of all proceeds going towards enhancing the gallery’s exhibits and programs. Artist Gallery Talks can be arranged for visiting groups such as schools and senior centers.
