The ninth grade had their first shabbaton in the SAR High School building—and what an incredible shabbaton it was!! The theme of Shabbat was “Who you Become,” which is part of the school’s tagline: “It’s not just what you learn. It’s who you become.” Discussion groups and words of Torah were all themed around encouraging students to think about their religious growth during their high school years, emphasizing both בין אדם למקום and בין אדם לחברו .
Students had to miss what would have been a very meaningful day of chesed on erev Shabbat as everyone recovered from the snowstorm and extreme transportation challenges. It was inspiring to see everyone bounce back and head into Shabbat ready for inspiration and togetherness! As everyone arrived, students set up sleeping bags and blow-up mattresses—boys on one floor, girls on another. From the minute Shabbat began, it was clear the SAR HS Class of 2022 had already become a family. The ruach throughout Shabbat was record breaking! A beautiful kabbalat Shabbat set the tone for each tefillah. There was singing and dancing, grade-wide games aimed at getting to know one another even better, and thoughtful ideas expressed during sessions. On Shabbat day, five senior LEADers shared their own religious journeys during their years at SAR HS. Shabbat ended with a beautiful Havdalah that went on and on and even shook the building. On Motzei Shabbat, students went ice skating together at Rye Playland before going home happy and tired.
Planning and running a Shabbaton is an enormous undertaking. It could not have been done without the support of the administration, the leadership of the student activities team and all the advisors, faculty, staff, fellows and senior LEADers that joined us for Shabbat. Freshmen students thank them for all the hours of work and time away from family to make the SAR hive buzz with so much energy!! Todah raba!!
