The third graders (Kitta Gimmel) at Manhattan Day School, made a very important phone call to the White House with the purpose of directly speaking to President Obama himself.
The students dialed 202-456-1111, the White House Comments Line, and waited patiently to voice the requests and needs of all third graders. Their requests included wanting to be President for the day, taking a tour of the White house and legislating new laws. The students waited and waited until an operator answered and denied them the opportunity to speak directly to the President. The operators suggested they email or write a letter but said that the President was unable to take the call.
The message “rang” clear. Morah Chana Raitman, their teacher, explained, “Through our daily prayers, we, as adults and children alike, have daily conversations with God. Only members of government are privy to the ‘secret number’ that reaches the President directly, yet we can all reach Hashem directly on a daily basis and even more so on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The White House switchboard is manned by professional operators but Hashem Himself listens to the Tefillot of all of Am Yisrael.”
It is during the time of Elul and Tishrei that the lines to Hashem are always open. Everyone davens to Hashem, asking that He listen to requests and respond favorably.
